The 24th Annual Community Day, a free massive food, clothing and social awareness event commemorating the Martin Luther King Jr. national holiday, will be held on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 1430 W. Manchester Ave. in Los Angeles from 9a.m. to 4p.m.
Presented by The Power of Love Ministries, Community Day is held in the spirit of Dr. King’s calling for a day of service, and Community Day has been responsible for providing tens of thousands of residents with free groceries, clothing, job fair, literacy awareness, free health screenings for more than two decades.
Bishop Edward Turner created Community Day with Dr. King’s theme and purpose of giving selflessly in mind, and he has been instrumental helping those families and children in need.
Recalling the day when the concept of Community Day was envisioned, Turner said, “I was at McDonald’s purchasing breakfast and a man asked me if I could spare some change. I then noticed that this was the same man that I would see on a regular basis and I thought to myself, ‘How many more people are just like him in this community?’
“I prayed and God inspired me to do something, and here we are some 24 years later doing a little more than just something,” he explained.
Among the array of activities scheduled for the event are a Business Expo, Business Prayer Breakfast, Youth Entrepreneur Workshop at the Youth Prayer Breakfast at 8:30 a.m., where youth can learn how to earn income online, a Classic Car Show, music concert, and rain rides for the children.
Also, Power of Love Ministries will present the inaugural Doers Convention at the same location. The participants include Pastor Theo Wilkins of Three Oaks Baptist Church of Los Angeles on Thursday, Jan. 17 and Pastor Eric Jackson of Power of Love Ministries of Antelope Valley on Friday, Jan. 18.
