Marjorie Laverne Cash, a longtime resident of greater Los Angeles, passed away on Nov. 23. She was 80 years old.

“It was very appropriate that God took her back on Thanksgiving night. Mama always had an attitude of gratitude,” noted her daughter, the Rev. Joyce L. Randall.

A celebration of Marjorie’s life is set for Friday, Dec. 8, at 11 a.m., at St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church, 1720 Walnut Ave, in La Puente. The visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Marjorie was born on April 1, 1937 to Colonial Wells and Gladys McDaniel.  After graduating from Manassas High School and marrying her high school sweetheart, Marjorie decided to change directions, according to her daughter.

“In 1967, she made the bold decision to seek a better way of life for her four precious children in Los Angeles,” said Randall. “With her warm, pleasant personality, and genuine love for people, she entered a program of study at Rancho Los Amigos Children’s Hospital in Downey where she earned her LVN license.”

Relocating her family to the suburb of La Puente, Marjorie joined St. Stephen Baptist Church in 1973.  Her activities included participation in the church bake-off, recalled Randall, who said, “Mama’s sweet potato pies always won 1st prize and there would be fights over servings of her banana pudding.  In fact, she stopped entering the contest so the younger women could win.”

Marjorie was also actively involved in the San Gabriel Valley NAACP and served many years as the chapter secretary.  In addition, she worked 25 years as a Public Health Nurse before retiring from the Central District Health Center of Los Angeles.

She was preceded in death by her son, Jeff (Carla) Agnew; sister, Dora Walker; brothers, Waddell Laws and Frank Tuggle; first husband, Jeff Agnew, mother, Gladys McDaniel; father, Colonial Wells; and a Council of Elders.

She leaves to cherish her beautiful memory, her husband, William Cash; son, Elton (Jackie) Agnew; daughters, the Rev. Joyce L. (Michael) Randall and Robin (Jeffrey) Estes; sisters, Dolores Washington and Gladys (Jimmy) Laws of Memphis, TN; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and a host of nephews, nieces, and extended family.
