Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) volunteers helped to bring the joy of reading to more than 300 students at the Warren Lane Elementary School in Inglewood on national Read Across America Day.
LAX Community Relations Division partnered with Warren Lane in sponsoring a variety of activities to engage students in this school-wide literacy event. LAX employees read Dr. Seuss books to students in transitional kindergarten to 3rd grade classrooms, provided a Kindle e-Reader grand prize to the winner of the Reading Trivia Contest for 4th to 6th graders, and cupcakes for the Dr. Seuss sing-a-long.
“Read Across America inspires the imagination of children through reading, and we are proud to play a part in giving Warren Lane students this fundamental building block for success in their future.” said Treva Miller, LAX Community Relations Division Read Across America Program Coordinator. “Our division focuses on addressing the needs of surrounding airport communities through opportunities such as youth programs, aviation education, and volunteerism.”
Reading programs such as this are key to unlocking a child’s potential. Dr. Eboni Kemp, Warren Lane Elementary School Principal said, “Encouraging children to embrace the joys of reading is one of the most important things you can do to help ensure their academic success, communication skills, and vocabulary skills later in life.”
Read Across America is the nation’s largest annual reading motivation and awareness program, encouraging children of all ages to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss.
