Fixins Soul Kitchen, the full-service soul food restaurant that celebrates African American culture and traditions, is proud to announce the grand opening of its new location at Downtown Los Angeles’ L.A. LIVE. The restaurant joins the original Fixins Soul Kitchen in Sacramento’s historic Oak Park neighborhood.

Fixins was founded in 2019 by former NBA All-Star and Mayor of Sacramento Kevin Johnson “KJ” and his wife, Michelle, combining his love of Black culture with her obsession with great food. Playing in the NBA for 12 years and constantly on the road left KJ craving home cooking, but feeling like there was a lack of quality soul food restaurants. Fixins Soul Kitchen redefines the American soul food experience by offering the best traditions with great service and a modern vibe.

The restaurant pays homage to the soul food KJ grew up surrounded by, incorporating family favorite recipes into the menu such as Grandma Glady’s famous peach cobbler. The menu features other delicious made from scratch dishes, including the signature chicken and waffles, oxtails, shrimp & grits, deep fried deviled eggs, and much more. Diners can choose from a selection of “fixins” to accompany with their entree, including collard greens, mac and cheese, candied yams, black-eyed peas, red beans and rice and grits. Drinks include a variety of Kool-Aid flavors, sweet tea, cocktails such as “Adult Kool-Aid”and Bourbons from Uncles Nearest, a former slave and the first African American master distiller in the US, widely considered to be the godfather of Tennessee whiskey.

Fixins LA brings a fresh and cool design aesthetic with natural woods, navy blues and deep greens. The walls are decorated with 12 original pieces from artist Milton Bowens, depicting twists on nostalgic and iconic soul food brands. Peppered throughout the space are cookbooks from Black authors and vintage soul food kitchen essentials like rolling pins, graters and flour scales. The restaurant includes 6,700 square feet of indoor space with 190 seats and a 1,300 square-foot outdoor patio space that overlooks the heart of the L.A. LIVE complex, with a seating capacity of 60.

Fixins will stimulate economic growth with more than $4 million annually in economic impact in the greater Los Angeles area, and create 140 new jobs for the local community. The restaurant is partnering with a re-entry workforce program to specifically train and recruit underemployed populations, and will also support Brotherhood Crusade, a nonprofit organization that provides necessary resources, program services and a voice of advocacy to traditionally underserved communities.
