The Kawaida Institute of Pan-African Studies will hold its 33rd annual seminar in social theory and practice with emphasis on leadership and social change, Sunday, July 24 through Saturday, July 30, 2011 at the African American Cultural Center, 3018 W. 48th Street, Los Angeles, CA.
Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor of Africana Studies, California State University, Long Beach and an activist scholar of national and international recognition will conduct this weeklong seminar. Dr. Karenga holds two Ph.D.’s one in political science (USIU) and another in social ethics (USC), as well as an honorary doctorate from the University of Durban, South Africa. Also, he is the chair of Us and the National Association of Kawaida Organizations, the creator of the pan-African cultural holiday, Kwanzaa and author of numerous books including, Kawaida and Questions of Life and Struggle.
The KIPAS seminar will provide critical analysis, discussion and strategies for addressing major issues confronting our community and the world from a Kawaida perspective. Kawaida is one the most influential philosophies in Black intellectual history, playing a significant role in the movement of Black Power, Black Arts, Black Conventions, Black Studies, ancient Egyptian Studies, Black student unions, Black theology and ethics, the Million Person Marches and reparations.
Designed for current and future leaders, teachers, organizers, activists and critical thinkers, the seminar brings together people in various fields from around the country who share a common concern for African people and the world and a common commitment to progressive social change.
Over the last 33 years, KIPAS has trained critical thinkers in many fields of Black life, including politics, religion, morality and ethics, labor, family and male/female relationships. The range of participants include professors, journalists, theologians, community activists, students and others seeking to learn or broaden their knowledge and enhance their ability to improve the community and world around them.
Topics for this year include: Kawaida Philosophy, The Movement, Alliances and Pres. Obama; The Ethics Peace and War; Environmental Ethics; Min. Malcolm X and Fannie Lou Hamer; HIV/AIDS; and The struggles in Haiti and Africa. Except for the opening session 3-5 pm Sunday, July 24 and the closing session 9-12 am Saturday, July 30, the seminars will be held 6-9 pm Mon thru Fri July 25-29.
