As any Taste of Soul patron can attest, chicken is as much a staple of the event as music and family fun. Taste of Soul vendors work tirelessly in the months leading up to the festival perfecting recipes and finding creative ways to reinvent an old favorite to entice customers. For John Wy of CJ’s Wings, the secret of his success lies in the sauce. “We have exclusive distribution rights for “Boss Sauce,” said the founder and creator of CJ’s Wings. So what is “Boss Sauce?” According to John, it’s a gourmet sauce from NY that’s 30 years old and it’s a staple sauce on the East Coast. “It’s a sweet, tangy, hot mixture that’s fat, gluten and lactose free in addition to being vegan and kosher,” said John. These days, it appears the delicious and healthy concoction has found its fans on the West Coast, which equates to sweet success for CJ’s Wings. “My cousin (Cornelius Harrell) and I opened up our first restaurant in Altadena in 2006,” said John. “We had marginal success and decided to operate a food truck in 2010 instead.” With the low overhead costs and increasing popularity of food trucks in recent years CJ’s Wings is set to soar. Recently, thanks to some savvy business investors, CJ’s is poised to open three restaurants this year, potentially in Monrovia, Los Angeles and Inglewood.
2014 will mark the second appearance at the Taste of Soul for CJ’s Wings. “This year we’re slated to participate and we’re really looking forward to once again bring good food to the Taste of Soul audience,” said John with enthusiasm. “Last year we were very well received and we only expect it to get better this year. We had people who were introduced to us at the Taste of Soul who still support us. They follow our Instagram and Twitter accounts and show up wherever we go.” Along with the “Boss Sauce” CJ’s has another ace up its sleeves for Taste of Soul visitors: a broaster. “We’re one of the only food trucks with a broaster,” claims John. “Because of it, we can cook 70 wings in eight minutes. With the broaster, the food is cooked from the inside out in its own juice, which makes for a very tasty wing.” If you’re looking for more than just wings, CJ’s has also added steak and chicken hoagies, fried sweet corn and vegetarian offerings to its menu items. “Taste of Soul is an important event for many small businesses like ours,” states John. “It was a launching pad for our business and our success. It’s like going to grandma’s house on Sunday—great food, great people, great fun and good times.”
