The members of Church of the Transfiguration will mark 100 years of spiritual service to the South Los Angeles community during its four-day centennial celebration beginning Thursday, August 3, and concluding on Sunday, August 6.

Widely known for outstanding ministries, school and outreach programs, the Leimert Park parish has positively impacted thousands of lives since its founding in 1923.  Originally located on Browning and Western Avenues, the congregation has worshipped since 1937 in the edifice located at 2515 W. Martin Luther King Blvd.

According to Pastor Godwin Akpan, S.S.J., and the 100th Anniversary Committee, the public is invited to attend the various events to commemorate the centennial. The activities, which will take place on the church campus, will reflect Transfiguration’s mission “to proclaim and promote the kingdom of God by sharing a Catholic spirituality based upon the Word of God, worship, service, and family.”

Pastor Akpan referred to Luke 5:36-38 to describe his feelings, saying that the 100th anniversary year of 2023, “marks the dawn of a new era in Transfiguration history; an era when ‘no one tears a piece from a new cloak to patch an old one, no one pours new wine into old wineskins . . . new wine must be poured into fresh wineskins.’”

Transfiguration members officially kicked-off the celebration in April during an Earth Day observance where the pastor and members joined with Ezrach Brain Trust to plant six trees on the grounds surrounding the church.   The action symbolized the congregation’s commitment to “work toward a sustainable future for our generations,” said a participant.

“Also, the Anniversary Committee solicited donors, sponsors, and organized several fundraisers with proceeds to benefit the celebration, including a Silent Auction and Jazz Brunch featuring live music under band directors Chris Nuno and Chris Robertson, guest musicians, singers, and Transfiguration School Jazz Band,” added a spokesperson.

As part of the centennial celebration, a souvenir journal will be available containing congratulatory messages and ads.  Also, Maya Williams will debut a documentary featuring parishioner sharing personal and family history with Church of the Transfiguration.
