CDU alumni weekend features second annual Drs. Ruth and Ludlow Creary Lecture, CME course on trauma and violence, plus evening gala

Charles R. Drew University’s Alumni Homecoming Weekend, on Friday, October 4, at the Marriott Marina Del Rey, 4100 Admiralty Way, features a full day of activities for CDU graduates.

Sen. Holly Mitchell (D-30) will speak at noon on Friday, on “Strengthening the Healthcare Safety Net in Los Angeles” at the second annual Drs. Ruth and Ludlow Creary Lectureship Luncheon.

Also on Friday, there will be a Continuing Medical Education (CME) course entitled “The Impact of Trauma and Violence on Health and Healing” from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.  This program will be co-led by Dr. Deborah Prothrow-Stith, Dean of the CDU College of Medicine, and Dr. Denese Shervington, Chair of the CDU Department of Psychiatry and Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education, a nationally-recognized expert on the topic.

According to Dr. Prothrow-Stith, these issues hit hardest in the type of undeserved community where the University is located. “Many of the people that you encounter during the course of moving around our community are literally ticking time bombs,” she says.

The course is geared toward primary care physicians and health care providers responsible for patients who have experienced or observed trauma and violence in their life.

The evening Alumni Homecoming Gala, themed “It’s Time To Give Drew Its Due,” will begin with a reception at 6 p.m., and dinner and program at 7 p.m. Entertainment includes The Gentlemen’s Ensemble Band featuring vocalist Vicki Love, comedian Barry Brewer and DJ Kerry Neal.

The Stovall Foundation and Housing Corporation is Gold Sponsor.

The Alumni Homecoming Weekend also features Jazz at Drew, a concert and community event, on Saturday, October 5, on the CDU campus CDU at 1731 E. 120th St., Los Angeles, Calif. 90059.  The concert will be headlined by The Ohio Players and Will Downing, and will also feature Next, Louie Cruz Beltran, the Lao Tizer Band featuring Karen Briggs and Eric Marienthal and Los Angeles’s own Toni Scruggs. Tickets are available at jazzatdrew.com.
