In February, West Basin Municipal Water District launched Change & Save, a water conservation program designed to assist communities in West Basin’s service area that have historically lower participation rates in water conservation programs. To date, the Change & Save program has served more than 300 households in Inglewood, Hawthorne, Lawndale, Gardena, Carson, and Lennox.
“In the midst of these difficult times, West Basin’s Change & Save program has helped many families in our local communities by providing them with free tools and resources that enable them to save water and money on their utility bills,” said Gloria D. Gray, President of the West Basin Board of Directors.
The program is available to help local communities by offering residents free water-savings device kits, a free on-line water-efficiency home survey, and a rebate of up to $500 towards the purchase of a qualifying high-efficiency clothes washer, one of the highest rebate amounts for clothes washers in California.
The program is designed to help residents conserve water, and to save money through reduced water and energy bills. Residents receive free low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators, potentially saving thousands of gallons of water each year. By replacing old fixtures with new water-saving devices, residents can achieve sustained annual savings through their utility bills.
“The Change & Save program was fairly easy to maneuver through, and the program representatives provided step-by-step instructions to make sure that my family was able to take advantage of the $500 rebate,” said Ms. Bernadette Smith, a satisfied program participant. “The devices installed will reduce my water use, help the environment, and lower my water bill.”
High-efficiency clothes washers use approximately 55% less water than standard clothes washers, potentially reducing household water use by about 11,000 gallons a year. Clothes washers represent a significant amount of total indoor water use and energy demand.

West Basin is partnering with the South Bay Environmental Services Center and Allegra Consulting to administer the program.
