
The recent passing of Deacon Carl Ballton has deeply touched the greater Los Angeles community. A well-known philanthropist and civic leader, Carl was beloved and admired by many for his commitment to uplifting the L.A.’s Black community.
Carl served as a senior vice president at Union Bank as well as president and CEO of the MUFG Union Bank Foundation. In this capacity, he implemented the charitable contribution policies and initiatives of both the bank and the foundation.

In the area of community service, Carl was a member of several corporate advisory boards including the United Negro College, the Greater Los Angeles African American Chamber of Commerce, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles, Valley Economic Development Center, and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) in Los Angeles. Also, Carl chaired the Deacon Board and Brotherhood Organization at West Angeles Church of God in Christ.
For the past several years, Carl and his wife, Dr. Lula Ballton, called the Atlanta, Georgia area home, yet they both remained active and involved in the Los Angeles area where they had resided for years. Carl and Dr. Lula Ballton observed their 55th wedding anniversary in Nov. 2024. They are the parents of three adult children.
The final viewing of his remains is on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Murray Brothers Funeral Home in Atlanta. A celebration of his life is set for Thursday, Feb. 27, at 11 a.m., at Cascade United Methodist Church, 3144 Cascade Road in in Atlanta.
