The University Of California Board Of Regents announced Georgia Tech Engineering Dean, Dr. Gary S. May, as the next University of California, Davis Chancellor. Dr. May will be UC Davis’ first African-American Chancellor.
“The California Legislative Black Caucus applauds President Napolitano’s decision to select Dr. Gary May as the next Chancellor for UC Davis,” said California Legislative Black Caucus (CLBC) Chair, Assemblymember Chris Holden. “Dr. May is a proven leader who has fought tirelessly for equal access to education and opportunity.”
During his time with Georgia Tech, Dr. May founded the Summer Undergraduate Research in Engineering/Science (SURE) program that was designed to attract talented minority student into graduate school. He also founded and directed the Facilitating Academic Careers in Engineering and Science program (FACES), designed to encourage minority engagement in engineering and science careers.
Dr. May has received numerous awards throughout his career including the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (awarded by President Obama) and the Robert M. Janowiak Outstanding Leadership and Service Award given by the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Heads Association (ECEDHA). He was also selected as a fellow to the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science & Technology Policy Fellowship.
