Legendary boxer Jack Johnson will be honored this Saturday at a boxing exhibition at Zoe Christian Fellowship.

The California Boxing Commissioner has recently approved six amateur boxers to become professional fighters.

Devon Smith (132 lbs), Calvin Odom, Jr. (161 lbs) Angel Lopez (120 lbs), Giovani Arroyo (120 lbs), Ahmad Tavares (168 lbs), and George Alvarez (180 lbs) will showcase their abilities this Saturday, July 16, at Zoe Christian Fellowship of Los Angeles, located at 5315 West Adams Blvd.  The event begins at 2 p.m.

Amateur boxers such as Jonathan Sherman (147 lbs), Damon Ace (165 lbs), and Sonny Mendoza (139 lbs), will soon become eligible for the professional ranks after a few more amateur matches.  These young fighters will also display their abilities against equally talented opponents at this event.

Also at this event there will be a tribute to Jack Johnson, the first black heavyweight champion of the world.

Sammy Sanders, the promoter of this event, may be the last living person to be trained by Johnson.  Sanders trained under Johnson in the summer of 1944, and even lived with the champ during that time in Chicago.

Sanders points out that Jackie Robinson broke the baseball color barrier in 1947, but Johnson did the same thing 40 years earlier.

“Before Johnson they wouldn’t even let black people in the same arena, let alone the same ring,” Sanders said.
