Bishop Kirkland’s Call to Action for All Churches and AME Church Members to Join “Let’s Move 5th District”

Bishop T. Larry Kirkland, Presiding Prelate, Fifth Episcopal District of the AME Church, will launch the “Let’s Move 5th District” campaign on Thursday, July 8, 2010 at A Call to the Wall Christian Education Summit in Las Vegas, NV.

“Let’s Move 5th District” is dedicated to empowering and inspiring AME church members to take charge of their health and improve the quality of their lives.

Championed by Bishop T. Larry Kirkland, this initiative encourages us all to make a few simple, daily changes that will reap great rewards in bodily and spiritual health.

A supportive branch of First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” campaign to end childhood obesity in one generation, “Let’s Move 5th District” is founded on four key principles:

  • Empowering church members to make healthier choices
  • Creating healthier church environments
  • Inspiring members to increase physical activity
  • Ensuring access to quality, affordable foods in our communities

“This spirit-filled, power-packed conference is the ideal setting to kick-off this important health program designed to help all AME church members live longer, healthier lives by taking better care of our body temples,” said Bishop T. Larry Kirkland.

In addition to our esteemed church leadership, the kick-off will feature a health message from Toni (Antronette) K. Yancey, MD, MPH, Professor in the UCLA School of Public Health and Co-Director of the UCLA Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Equity. Dr. Yancy was recently appointed to the Board of Partnership for a Healthier America, the non-profit guiding First Lady, Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign.

Additionally, a praise stretch exercise session will be led by Dr. Thema Bryant-Davis, Associate Professor at Pepperdine University and licensed psychologist, poet, dancer and AME minister.

“All community leaders must be more responsible and be a part of the solution with this epidemic,” said Pastor John J. Hunter, Senior Minister of FAME Church. “Leaders in this struggle are not only legislators and public figures they are also advertisers, teachers and parents. We must do as the Lord instructs: “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.”

“Let’s Move L.A.” is the Los Angeles supportive arm of the campaign being led by FAME Corporations and First AME Church of Los Angeles.

“Without our help, this next generation of children will grow up more likely to get diabetes, cancer and heart disease, and will suffer many physical but preventative aliments,” said First Lady Denise Hunter, President and Chief Operating Officer of FAME Corporations.
