(Sacramento ) – Assemblymember Reginald Byron Jones-Sawyer, Sr., (D- South Los Angeles) announces press event to celebrate the signing of Assembly Bill (AB) 413 which changes the problematic label “at-risk youth” to “at-promise youth” in California’s penal and education laws.

“I am proud we are finally moving away from the biased mentality ‘at-risk’ encourages,” said Assemblymember Jones Sawyer. “For too long, this term has been used by our education and justice systems to reduce students living in difficult situations to their likelihood of becoming another statistic. This is a perception issue that has disproportionately impacted the opportunities of poor students and students of color. By recognizing our youth as ‘at-promise,’ we are highlighting their immense potential to succeed in all aspects of life and taking important steps to end the school to prison pipeline.

“The Governor’s signature on AB 413 makes California the first state in the nation to recognize our youth as ‘at-promise.’ It is with the hard work of advocates across the country that we were able to make this possible.”

Join Assemblymember Jones-Sawyer, Superintendent Dr. Debra Duardo of the Los Angeles County Office of Education, Superintendent Dr. Linda Dawon of SIATech, supporters, students, and members of the community as they celebrate the signing of AB 413 and the impact it will have on “at-promise” youth across the state.
