On Wednesday, April 15 The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater made its way to Los Angeles to perform Power of Ailey, one of three programs currently being held at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion from April 15 until April 19.

The three programs, Power of Ailey, Soul of Ailey, and Joy of Ailey, will be performed twice during the four day run. This will be the first time the dance company has performed in Los Angeles since 2013.

The performances will feature work from various choreographers, including Matthew Rushing.

Rushing choreographed the much anticipated ballet ODETTA, dedicated to the music of singer and civil rights activist Odetta Holmes, who Martin Luther King, Jr. once called the queen of American folk music.

“I’m so excited to share Odetta’s legacy through the art of dance,” Rushing said.

The ballet will make its West Coast debut today, Thursday, April 16, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and will be performed again on Sunday, April 19.

“I created ODETTA to give homage to a musician, a vocal artist, a humanitarian, and a civil rights activist.,” Rushing said. “After spending much time researching her work, listening to countless albums, and watching a great deal of interview footage, I decided on a selection of songs that became the building blocks of the ballet.”

Each program will showcase three to four performances, with each performance featuring various routines ranging from solos, improvisation, ballet, and modern dance.
