Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Pasadena/Altadena Chapter held its Annual Scholarship Jazz Brunch Fundraiser on Saturday, May 11, at Le Méridien Hotel in Arcadia.   More than 300 people attended to celebrate community icons and scholarship recipients.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of scholarships to deserving college-bound students, recognizing their academic achievements, leadership qualities, and commitment to excellence. This year, the Pasadena/Altadena Chapter, in partnership with the Pasadena/Altadena Ivy Foundation, awarded 13 scholarships to help the students pursue their higher education dreams.

The recipients were Ethan Allen, Asha Bailey, Skye Correy, Lauren Gray, Jaylen Jones, Eloheem Mahone, Eloheem Mahone, Megan Milton, Kennedy Mitchell-Egbo, Jae’da Reed, Jae’la Reed, Kimberly Robinson, Mia Walker, and Gabrielle White.

In addition, several civic leaders were recognized for their contributions to the community. The honorees were the Rev. Dr. Larry E. Campbell, pastor of First A.M.E Church, Pasadena; Brenda Harvey-Williams, City of Pasadena; and Dr. Nancy Gonzalez, John Muir High School.  They were all commended and presented awards acknowledging their outstanding commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others.

Other highlights included a presentation on Black culture by Grand Jeremy, who also served as emcee, and a captivating jazz performance by saxophonist J. Boykins. There was also outdoor shopping available with minority-owned business vendors.

“The dedication and perseverance of these students serve as a beacon of hope for our community, and we are proud to stand beside them as they embark on this transformative journey they are the Leaders Of Tomorrow: Champions Of Change,” said Dr. Carolyn Ford, president of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated ®, Pasadena/Altadena Chapter.

“We thank both the Pasadena community as well as the greater Los Angeles area for the continued support of our scholarship fundraiser.”
