L.A. Organization to Participate in Nationwide Celebration of Resilience, Advocacy, and Community Empowerment

The African American Infant and Maternal Mortality (AAIMM) Prevention Initiative will participate in the seventh annual Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW), which runs from April 11 to April 17. Founded and led by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance (BMMA), BMHW aims to raise awareness, promote activism, and foster community building around Black maternal health.

AAIMM, an organization born in L.A. and spearheaded by the Los Angeles Department of Public Health in collaboration with First 5 LA, the LA County Department of Health Services, the Department of Mental Health, Black-led community organizations, mental and health care providers, funders, and community members, will be among the leading advocates and influencers addressing the escalating concerns surrounding the national initiative to tackle Black maternal health issues.

Throughout the week, AAIMM and numerous Community Partners/Organizations, Birthworkers, Advocates and Leaders will collaboratively host. a series of events across Los Angeles County including:

  • Black Mamas Birthing Tour: An immersive journey through birthing spaces across LA County, providing insights into available resources and facilities for Black families.
  • Film Screenings and Discussions: Screenings of “Birthing Justice” and “Heal the Her’t: The Art of Storytelling” followed by discussions on maternal health and advocacy.
  • Community Baby Shower and Resource Fair: Providing essential resources and support for Black mamas and their families.
  • Doula and Midwife History Exhibit: Honoring the historical contributions of midwives and doulas in Black maternal health.
  • Journaling Workshops: Creating spaces for reflection and expression along the birthing journey.

Adjoa Jones, Director of AAIMM, emphasizes the significance of this initiative, stating, “Black Maternal Health Week amplifies Black mothers’ voices and tackles systemic health disparities, crucial in LA County, where maternal mortality rates are four times higher. Through partnerships with Funders, Sponsors, Community Leaders, and our dedicated Community, we’re committed to equitable birthing experiences and improved maternal health outcomes. Together, we drive meaningful change and support every Black mother and birthing person.”

Please note that due to expected inclement weather, the Baby Shower, scheduled for this Saturday, April 13, at 10 a.m., has been tentatively rescheduled for Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 1p.m.
