On the final day of open enrollment for Covered California, The California Endowment announced a $2 million commitment towards reaching 100 percent Medi-Cal enrollment within the African-American community. Endowment CEO Dr. Robert K. Ross made the announcement Sunday at the “Enroll at the Bowl; Morning ‘til Midnight” event in Pasadena, supporting Covered California’s African-American Enrollment Initiative.

“California has been a leader in enrollment and outreach under the Affordable Care Act, and we salute the noteworthy efforts by our partners at Covered California. But we all have more work to do to ensure that everyone has access to quality, affordable health care,” said Dr. Ross. “Our goal is 100 percent Medi-Cal enrollment of eligible African-Americans in California, and we’re proud to be partnering with a number of great organizations to make this happen.”

The initiative includes targeted paid media efforts coordinated through California Black Media, as well a strategic grassroots effort organized through the California Black Health Network to execute targeted outreach and education, including health fairs, town halls and church rallies.

Although Covered California’s open enrollment period ended yesterday, those eligible for Medi-Cal can enroll year-round.
