11)The fight for racial inequality at the University of Missouri reached a pivotal moment when 30 members of the Mizzou Football team refused to participate in practices and other team activities until Tim Wolfe the president of the University resigned. Black students had expressed their campus experiences to Wolfe, but Wolfe remained indifferent to their complaints. The protest of the players caused Wolfe and chancellor R. Bowen Loftin to resign.
10) The Carolina Panthers were the last team to go undefeated in the NFL during the 2015-16 season. Quarterback Cam Newton made 33 touchdown passes and ran in 8 touchdowns. The team rushed a total of 1,845 yards made 48 touchdowns. All of this led the team to a 14-0 start, unfortunately the team lost to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. Cam Newton is popularly known for ‘Dabbing’ in the end zone after scoring touchdowns.
9) In April, the California Interscholastic Federation announced its 100th year anniversary Spring All-Century team, naming notable players throughout history. Fremont alum Willie Crawford represented 1964 in baseball. He went on to play for UCLA and the LA Dodgers. Also included on the list are baseball players Frank Robinson (Oakland McClymonds, 1953), Darryl Strawberry (Crenshaw, 1980), and Jackie Robinson (Pasadena John Muir, 1953).
8) After 40 years, the Golden State Warriors earn their fourth Championship title in their Franchise history. Guard Steph Curry highlighted his perimeter shooting accuracy with a 44.3 percent shooting average during the 2014-2015 season. Curry also won the 2015 NBA All-Star 3-point Contest. Small Forward Andre Iguodala won Finals MVP after the six-game fight. Their success continued in to the 2015-16 season with a 24-game winning streak at the beginning of the season.
7) The Dorsey Girls Volleyball team became the in-season Coliseum League Champions with a 9-1 league and 14-8 overall record. Their efforts would lead them to the playoff quarterfinals. Senior Tyla Moore became a member of the Division IV All-City Second Team.
6) The Division II Crenshaw boys’ baseball team went undefeated in the Coliseum League with a 12-game winning streak. Miles Brown had a .556 percent batting average and Adari Lesley had a .500 batting average in 9 games. Aaron Eden earned a spot on the All-City team.
5) Notre Dame College Division II wrestler Joey Davis earned his third NCAA Championship. Davis has yet to lose a college game with a 110-0 career record as of the end of last season. If he wins one more title, Davis will become the fifth wrestler in NCAA history to win four championships.
4) Her prowess in Rugby pushed View Park Senior Nia Toliver into the national spotlight in November. Her talent awarded her an invitation to play for USA Rugby national team development camps and trips to multiple countries. Sports Illustrated named Toliver High School Student Athlete of the Month.
3) In November 2015, NBA Superstar Kobe Bryant announced his retirement at the end of the 2015-16 season. Early in his career, Kobe assisted the Los Angeles Lakers in clinching three NBA Championships from 2000-02. He also earned back-to-back Championship titles in 2009 and 2010. In recent years, Bryant adopted the nicknames “The Black Mamba” and “Vino.”
2) Tennis phenom Serena Williams brought a lot of buzz as she came close to being the first singles player to earn a calendar Grand Slam since Steffi Graf in 1987. Williams earned both her sixth Wimbledon and Australian Open titles. Williams also won her third French Open title. She also completed her 700th career win in April. In December, Sports Illustrated named Williams the Sportsperson of the Year and AP Female Athlete of the Year.
1)Veteran Sports Center Broadcaster Stuart Scott passed way after fighting appendicular Scott had a 22-year career with ESPN and was known for his coined phrases like ‘as cool as the other side of the pillow,’ and ‘Boo-Yah!’ Scott covered major sporting events, including the Final Four, MLB playoffs and the NBA Finals. He battled cancer since 2007, according to ESPN.
