Serena Williams, the GOAT who has won 39 Grand Slam major titles in tennis, spoke on a stage at the 30th Annual Essence Festival of Culture on July 6 about her new beauty line, Wyn Beauty.

During her session, which was part of the BeautyCon activation of the festival, the tennis legend was asked her thoughts on fellow Compton native Kendrick Lamar’s megahit, “Not Like Us,” which mentions her by name.

“I love that song. It’s like the hit of the summer,” Williams said, later sharing that she “absolutely is crip-walking to that song.”

Compton is home to some of the biggest names in the rap game, but it was also where the Williams sisters got their start and learned the game of tennis.

“Growing up in Compton was such a special time,” Williams said, recalling that it was the time when Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, and even nearby Snoop Dogg were really gaining popularity.

In addition to being one of the greatest athletes of all time, Williams has certainly become a beauty and fashion icon in her own right. Williams says that Wyn, her new beauty line with 10 products, and now available in Ulta stores, is the inclusive beauty brand she’s always wanted. And when it comes to being fabulous, she attributes it to her Compton roots.

“You kind of had to be fabulous growing up in Compton. There were so many amazing things coming out of Compton. Can everyone be like us?” she said, with a little laugh.
