Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin continues to represent Black coaches in the NFL positively as he was recently signed to a three-year contract extension with the Steelers. Tomlin signing the contract makes him the longest-tenured coach in the NFL. He will be the Steelers head coach until the 2027 season. If Tomlin completes his contract extension he will have been head coach for a total of 21 years.

The Virginia native is no ordinary face to the Steelers organization. The Steelers hired Tomlin in 2007 and his coaching performance has allowed him to keep his job since. Tomlin does not plan on coaching with any other team as he is very thankful for his contract being extended according to Yahoo Sports.

“I am appreciative for this contract extension and thankful for Art Rooney II for his support during my first 17 years in Pittsburgh,” Tomlin said via the team website. “We are continuing to work diligently to get back to where we belong: sustained playoff success with the ultimate goal of winning the franchise’s seventh Lombardi Trophy.”

Over the course of 17 years in Pittsburgh, Tomlin has yet to lead the Steelers to a losing season; he has won at least eight or nine games per season. Tomlin has 275 wins and 173 losses in his career, equivalent to a 63.3% winning rate. Additionally, He has led the Steelers to the playoffs 11 times.

The Steelers are known for consistently keeping the same coaches on staff year in and year out as they have only had three different head coaches in the past five decades. The Steelers expressed on their website his experience and results have allowed him to gain trust.

“Mike Tomlin’s leadership and commitment to the Steelers have been pivotal to our success during his first 17 years as head coach,” said Steelers President Art Rooney II. “Extending his contract for three more years reflects our confidence in his ability to guide the team back to winning playoff games and championships, while continuing our tradition of success.”

This upcoming season the Steelers are expected to go far with the additions of quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.
