Margaret Gene (Rivers) Andrews, a talented and inspiring educator and dedicated servant of God, has passed away. She was 79 years old.
A celebration of Margaret’s life will be held on Saturday, April 27, at 2 p.m., at St. James In The City Episcopal Church, 3903 Wilshire Blvd., in Los Angeles.
A native of Houston, Texas, Margaret was born on June 7, 1944, to Eugene Rivers and Margie Louise Rivers. She and her family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada when she was in preschool. Margaret attended Madison Elementary and finished her education in Las Vegas at Rancho High School in 1962.

Margaret was accepted into the University of Southern California (USC) in 1962, on a full scholarship. She graduated from USC in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science in Social Studies, with a minor in Music. In 1971, Margaret returned to USC and graduated with a Master of Science in Educational Administration in 1973. While at USC, Margaret became a member of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated, and there she met her husband, Viceroy Andrews, from the Virgin Islands. They married on July 13, 1968, in Las Vegas.
Before receiving her B.S. in Social Studies, Margaret was recruited by the L.A. Unified School District (L.A.U.S.D.) and began her teaching career in 1967. She served the L.A.U.S.D for over 42 years in roles such as principal, consultant, coordinator, administrator, mentor teacher, master teacher, and training teacher.
Margaret gave her life to Christ as a child while attending Zion Methodist Church in Las Vegas. She later joined Christ the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church with her husband, and later they moved to St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in Compton, CA., and finally settling at St. James In-the-City.
She served God in many positions – president of Episcopal Church Women, president of Daughters of the King, choir member, Lector, Eucharistic Minister, leader of the Girls Friendly Society, board member, and secretary of Union of Black Episcopalians from 1990-2024.
Margaret lived a happy, love-filled 79 years of life. She was always bright, enthusiastic, attentive, committed, and never complained when life got hard, or things seemed grim. She faced death as she faced life with grace, courage, and humility. She will be sorely missed by all her family and friends.
Margaret is survived by her husband, Viceroy Andrews; children, Anazette Andrews and Viceroy Andrews, Jr.; grandson, Noah Thomas Andrews-Ukwa; and sister, Marilyn Armstrong of Las Vegas.
