Gil Scott-Heron “Bluesology” showcases the impactful poetry and music of the legendary spoken-word pioneer. The theatrical production takes place on Tuesday, March 28, at 7:30 p.m., at the Willie Agee Playhouse, located inside Edward Vincent Park at 600-698 N. Park Avenue in Inglewood.
Gia Scott-Heron, Gil’s daughter, headlines the show sponsored by Poets Jazz House, a spoken-word and music lounge. Gia is an award-winning essayist, slam poet, spoken word, and recording artist. The ensemble cast also includes Conney Williams, Lorenzo Frank, Clent Bowers, Yawo Watts, Artus Mansoir, Tuesday Conner and Denise Lyles-Cook. Lynne Conner is the director.
Scott-Heron was a critically acclaimed performer in the 1970s and 80s. Describing himself as a “bluesologist,” his recordings featured a mesmerizing mix of rap, jazz, blues and soul. His tracks often contained frank commentary on currents events from an African American viewpoint. One of his most popular songs, “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” is still played on radio stations.
