Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson (D-Carson) released the following statement in response to a bomb threat against Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU), a historically Black college located in the Willowbrook community in Los Angeles.
“Today, I was informed that CDU closed its campus in response to a bomb threat sent by a Nazi fascist racist White man. As I heard about the violent threat leveled against California’s current and future doctors, nurses, and first responders, I was utterly enraged and pissed off! How can anyone threaten to take the lives of those who have committed themselves to provide lifesaving services? This makes me sick to my stomach.
We’re talking about the hard working students and staff members who have worked tirelessly in my district to keep families safe from the COVID-19 pandemic. During the first COVID-19 outbreak, CDU staff and students were on the frontlines providing testing day after day to prevent the spread of the virus in one of the state’s most vulnerable communities.
This racist threat of violence against California’s only historically Black college and Latino serving university will not stand, won’t be tolerated, and must be investigated.
In light of the seriousness of this threat and the threats against Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the nation, I’ve contacted the Governor’s Office, Attorney General’ Office, the Federal Department of Justice and President Biden to take action against this racist attack NOW.
I stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters who are frightened and worried for their loved ones due to these racists threats of violence.
Hate can’t win when we stand together!”
