The Lay Organization of Second AME Church will hold their Annual Day service on Sunday, October 8, at 10 a.m., in the edifice located at 5500 S. Hoover St., in Los Angeles.
According to Pastor Carolyn Baskin-Bell, the theme is “Laypersons Called To Serve.”
Inviting the public to attend, she said, “Please join us in recognizing the outstanding efforts of Second AME’s Lay Organization.”
The guest speaker is Jacquelyn Dupont-Walker, director of Lay Activities for the Southern California Conference Lay Organization. Affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal Church since birth, Church, Dupont-Walker serves as the director of the denomination’s Social Action Commission and is active locally at Ward AME Church.
Also, she is the president of the Ward Economic Development Corporation, one of the first faith-based EDCs in the city. WEDC operates three housing complexes in Los Angeles for low-income families and seniors. In 2013, L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti appointed Dupont-Walker to the Board of Directors of Los Angeles County Metropolitan Authority (METRO) where she continues to serve.
Geneva McKinney is the president of the Lay Organization and Alma Scott-Lurry is the Annual Day chairperson. Outlining the church’s long history, McKinney said, “Second AME Church is 109 years old and continues to serve the surrounding diverse community in the Vermont-Slauson corridor. Youth through senior members are active in various ministries and service programs, including providing shelter through the winter homeless program as well as outreach to sick and shut-in persons.”
Scott-Lurry added, “We strive to live out our church motto, ‘Second To None In Christ’ and all of the members of the Lay Organization invite the community to join us for this occasion.”
