Dr. David M. Carlisle, President and CEO of Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science(CDU) is delighted to announce the affirmation and commendation of WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) for the University’s recent significant progress and changes as a full-fledged university.
“This commendation is a remarkable departure from the past that once cast shadows on our accreditation and supports what we know internally within the University—that with proper management and leadership, accreditation exercise can and should be a positive confirmation of what an institution is doing right,” said President Carlisle.
The Commission stated its appreciation for the extensive work that CDU undertook in preparing for and supporting this Special Visit review. The WSCUC also commended CDU on its improved organizational structure, decision-making, governance, and faculty-related issues.
After receiving the Commission Action Letter, President Carlisle emphasized that “we will continue to grow our University and further fulfill our mission which includes developing a diverse group of health professional leaders who seek social justice, promote wellness, and provide care with excellence and compassion. The accreditation process is one that makes us better, and keeps us accountable to the students and community we serve.”
The President noted “The appointment of Dr. Steve O. Michael as Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost was lauded as a sign that would cohere administrative and educational action within the context of shared governance. With the right leadership team in place, CDU is poised for growth in the coming years.”
Provost Michael expressed his enthusiasm facing the work ahead. “Provosts are always joyful to receive full commendation of the regional accreditation agency. It confirms that the University is heading in the right direction. At CDU, we will not rest on our laurels, but rather we are re-committing ourselves to take the University to greater heights,” he said.
