Several weeks ago, I shared I was going to do a short self-imposed sabbatical to reflect, relax, rest, and restore my inner peace to end the year strong and start the new year with enthusiasm. While I was planning to get away for a few days, the word the Lord kept putting in my spirit was unshakable.

At first, I did not put a lot of thought into it, but the more I read various devotionals and books, the word kept staring me in the face. This made me look up the word and dig a little deeper.  Unshakable is something or someone that cannot be questioned or disputed.  It stands strong and cannot be changed. We are living in challenging times, and it is imperative we stand strong when the winds of life come because they are coming.

There are various forces of nature, such as rain, snow, thunder, and wind, to name just a few. The wind is a mighty force that can bring chaos, but it also clears out debris and can make the air fresh and clean.  A reed is a broad-leafed grass with feathery flower clusters that is stiff and can stand and thrive in all kinds of weather, especially through the turbulence that can be caused by wind.

If we want to be like a reed that can stand through the power of the wind, we must be deeply rooted. If you are not solid when difficult days hit you, you will fall and crumble.  Reeds can respond to life’s challenges because they are adaptable and resilient. They bend, but they do not break when the winds come to life.

The reed was created to be flexible and endure. It yields to pressure, but their roots run deep, and they can still stand even through the most difficult days. To be unshakable, it is important that we are flexible when faced with adversity.  The only way this can happen is if we are deeply rooted and can embrace change with grace and resilience.

After the recent election, I have spoken to several people who feel broken and scared of what the future holds.  One of the things I share with them when they ask me how I can be so calm is that no matter who is in the White House, what really matters is who controls your house.  We must make sure our homes are built on solid rock so that no matter what another human being may do, we know who holds tomorrow and how we can be unshakable and unstoppable.

Have you ever given some thought to what are the things that cause you to feel unstable or insecure?  Why do you feel those issues make you feel that way?  Is it time you turn self-doubt into unshakable confidence? What helps build up your confidence is when you understand yourself and what you believe in.  It also comes from doing the necessary things to give you a strong foundation for life.

Our core values are critical to helping us be unshakable. When we embrace our values, and we know that we know what is true and important (and ultimately what will truly last), it becomes difficult for people, places, and things to throw us off.

Think of the story of the three little pigs, one built his house out of straw, the other out of sticks, and finally, the smart pig built his house out of bricks, so when the wind came, his house was still standing. What are you made of?  Is it time for you to evaluate what you have been standing on? If you want to last through the test of time, it begins today with becoming unshakable. Being unshakable is in the little as well as the big things of life.

Just last night, as I was trying to bring closure to a work project, my scanner started acting up, and as I started to get frustrated, my husband reminded me, remember, your word of focus right now is unshakable, so do not let that scanner ruin your whole night.

Together, let us shake off the things that so easily beset us and let us stand strong to be unshakable and unstoppable.
