A key characteristic in all legendary artists is their vulnerability; their music reflects a universal stage for deep emotions to spread feverishly. Myko Lyric created melodic poetry through her five-song, penta-genre EP, “Songs from my Suitcase,” showcasing a truth felt deep within the soul.

Straight out of her collection of private journals, Myko Lyric cultivated a message of self-actualization and had euphoric sounds guide the journey inward. As a conduit of multiple dimensions of art, Myko Lyric explained her vessels of love through song composition and dance.

“Songs from my Suitcase” represents her journey toward a “metaphysical north star” where quality lyrics and addictive melodies meet. Los Angeles Sentinel had an exclusive interview with Myko Lyric, as she reflected on the journey to get to know herself as a multi-faceted artist. Myko Lyric shared her discipline and purpose for this project was to explore the full range of her own sound and sharpen her storytelling.

Looking back at her discipline and growth as a trained dancer, Myko Lyric recounted her earliest memories of intentional movement.

44 – A Review of ‘The unOFFICIAL, unSANCTIONED OBAMA MUSICAL’

“I was three-years-old when I began dancing at the Lula Washington Dance Theatre. I trained for seven years, got back into it at Hamilton Music Academy under the tutelage of the Debbie Allen Dance Academy’s Karen McDonald. My focus is now in modern and contemporary, but I am trained in ballet and jazz.” She expressed that her lean towards contemporary dance came from the call of freedom within choreography and organic pull from the music.

Feeling the urge to carry a tune, Myko Lyric began to find herself aligned with creating songs and musical production. She sensed her heart turning inwardly to answer a louder serenade while she was finishing school at NYU.

Myko Lyric stated, “Becoming a musician just felt written in the stars. My first name means dance child in Japanese and my middle name is Lyric. I’ve always had a love for words—from writing songs at 12-years-old to typing 20-page papers in college. Seeing ‘Wicked’ at the Pantages Theatre in 2004 was a catalyst for me, and I’ve wanted to meld music and dance ever since.”

Songs from My Suitcase” includes tracks like “Alaska” that echo the heartbeat of the love stricken. The melody feels aquatic and ripples of emotions are felt; forging healing words into a new truth. Other songs from the project include “South,” “Houston,” Virgina Beach,” and “New York.”

Myko Lyric considered her intentions behind the titles of her projects and stated, “I hoped for a well-thought out and creatively executed story. I was slowly guided into a cold, but dreamy world called ‘Alaska,’ reminiscent of and clearly inspired by Frank Ocean’s ‘Blonde.’”

Traveling through the episodes of life and getting this project done, Myko Lyric shared her biggest challenge was being honest.

“Honesty in the studio can translate into fear when releasing the music, and I was often presented with the choice to worry about people’s perception or focus on the need to capture a true feeling,” Myko Lyric said.

She summarized her victory to this closing statement, “My past isn’t baggage; it’s equipment.”
