1972- Major General Frederic E. Davison became the first African American to lead an infantry brigade in combat and commanded the 8th Infantry Division in Europe.

1984- William “Count” Basie, jazz musician and composer, died from pancreatic cancer in Hollywood, Florida.

1927- Coretta Scott-King was born in Marion, Alabama. The author, activist and civil rights leader helped lead the Civil Rights Movement alongside her husband Martin Luther King, Jr.
