Los Angeles Sparks Sign Kianna Smith to 7-Day Contract

The Los Angeles Sparks announced today the signing of guard Kianna Smith to a 7-Day contract. The Sparks are signing Smith after being granted a hardship exception. Smith will be available for today’s game at Crypto.com Arena against the Phoenix Mercury at 4 p.m. PT on ESPN. The Sparks drafted Smith out of Louisville in the second round of the 2022 WNBA Draft at No. 16 overall. She was waived prior to the regular season, after appearing in both Sparks preseason games. Detention Woes Continue for Brittney Griner

WNBA star Brittney Griner has been detained in Russia for over 120 days and the news surrounding her case continues to be grim. A scheduled phone call that she was supposed to have with her wife Cherelle on Saturday never happened due to a “logistical error” by the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. The call was supposed to take place on the couple’s fourth anniversary.

Sparks Welcome NCAA Contenders to Roster

 In the 2022 Draft, the Los Angeles Sparks selected Tennessee forward Rae Burrell, Kianna Smith of Louisville, UCONN center Olivia Nelson-Ododa, and Hawaii guard Amy Atwell. Head coach and general manager Derek Fisher was seeking out players who were positionless on defense and scorers on offense.

The effort to get WNBA champion Brittney Griner out of Russian detainment continues as the 2022 WNBA season draws near. During her opening statement at the WNBA Draft, commissioner Cathy Engelbert mentioned how the league is working to get Griner back into the United States.
