Unfortunately, death becomes an unwanted visitor to our homes and family leaving pain, suffering and hurt. Last week my oldest male cousin on the paternal side of my family, Benny Rene Harris, passed away. We were both raised by our grandmother, but due to our age difference we spent limited time together. Like many of us, Ben’s life had many ups and downs, highs and lows, sorrows, and setbacks. But I am proud to say during the last decade of his life, he truly dedicated his life and work to serving the Lord. He was active in his church and various other ministries extending his gifts and talents anyway and anywhere he could. Over the years Ben and I had established a routine of checking in weekly to see how the other one was doing and what was going on in our lives. One day he shared with me that he was not feeling well and that something was wrong. I urged him to go to the doctor and get checked out. For some reason many men, especially Black men hesitate to go to the doctor. After getting checked he found out that he was struggling with various illnesses including cancer.
They say we are not just another year older, but another year wiser. They also say we are not getting older; we are getting better. I must admit I have gotten wiser and better at understanding and internalizing that tomorrow is not promised and we truly do not know what the day may bring.

Recently my husband and I were sitting in the backyard enjoying a midsummer night evening and it happened, out of nowhere he says, “Wendy what role has fear played in your life?’ I was startled, stunned, and shocked by this dart to the heart question.
Something has happened in society that I have noticed over the last few years and that is many people believe work is hard and they do not want to do it. I am proud to say that I have always had a good work ethic. My grandmother instilled in me at an early age that the only place success comes before work is in the dictionary. She used to always say, “the early bird gets the worm.” She would tell me that someone may have more talent than me, but no one should ever out work me. I heard my
For the past 15 years I have had the privilege and pleasure of writing for the Los Angeles Sentinel, and it is always rewarding when someone shares with me how much they enjoyed or learned from one of my articles.
Most of us are familiar with Nat King Cole’s song Unforgettable. But have we stopped to think about what does it really mean to be unforgettable? Coco Chanel talked a lot about fashion being unforgettable.

Plato said, “One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors.” We are in countdown mode with less than two weeks before the election. Some of us have already cast our vote, either in person where we stood in long lines, or we sent our ballots in by mail. For those that may still be on the fence regarding if you are going to vote, I am telling you it is not an option. Too many people have fought, sacrificed, or even died for us to have the right to cast our vote. It is imperative that each one of us does our research about the candidates and the issues that are before us right now. If you are not sure, I am here to tell you your vote means everything. I decided to take a personal look at how I view the importance of everyone’s vote, especially during this 2020 election.
