Mayor Eric Garcetti today signed the city’s $11.2 billion budget for the 2021-22 fiscal year, which allocates historic spending of nearly $1 billion to combat Los Angeles’ homelessness crisis.
The Los Angeles City Council voted today to authorize the city to execute leases for homeless shelters in Harbor City and Tarzana.
With funding for additional homeless outreach workers already approved, the Los Angeles City Council today approved a motion to improve the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority’s outreach program. The motion, which was introduced by Councilwoman Nithya Raman and Councilmen Paul Krekorian and Curren Price, passed 14-0.
Combined with the COVID-19 pandemic and soaring mental health and substance abuse issues, homelessness in the region is comparable to “a significant natural disaster in Southern California with no end in sight,” U.S. District Judge David Carter wrote in an order filed late Sunday in federal court.
From January through July, the 2-1-1 hotline received 256 calls reporting hate. In response the County is launching the ‘L.A. VS Hate’ Campaign. It is a 3-part strategy to bring the County under one mission of unity, create a system to make reporting hate crime easier, and finally to expand the capacity to act when faced with a hate crime. The campaign uses art inspired programs to uplift the unity in a diversified community. Artists are invited to participate in creative interventions to share a common passion with all residents.
Statistics show an escalation in hospitalization, positive cases, and the overall community death rate is still in the double digits. Latest numbers surrounding coronavirus shared on July 13, reflected 13 additional deaths, all of them were between the ages of 65 and over, nine of the victims had underlining health conditions. This brings the total COVID-19 related deaths in the L.A. County to 3,822.
Los Angeles County Officials continue to emphasize the importance of taking precautionary steps towards opening the economy. As of June 18, Nail salons, spas, tattoo shops, casinos, bars, and wineries are now approved to reopen. The threat of coronavirus is still present, L.A. County officials look for the safest ways to gain economic recovery.
Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 the city began receiving necessary aid and grants to house people who were experiencing homelessness. The formula that left so many people unsheltered is when trauma meets unmanageable living costs. Over 20,000 Angelenos were housed last year, nearly 430-million dollars of the city budget will focus on the needs of the unsheltered.
Road maps from leading sectors are under county review, to continue the forward direction into economic recovery. Aligned with the guidance from the state, Los Angeles is looking to open more key sectors this month, approximately by June 12.
Friday, June 5, Public officials shared the latest news behind the COVID-19 Pandemic. Supervisor Soils acknowledged the hardest who have been hit are people of color. The death rate within African Americans is 31 deaths per 100,000 people. In comparison to the white community, there are 15 deaths per 100,000 people. If everyone shared the same statistics within the white ethnicity, Los Angeles would see 754 fewer deaths.
Friday, April 17. Mayor Eric Garcetti’s office announced the development of CARES Corps. This will be a federally funded initiative to be a stronger national response to COVID-19. The Mayor of Los Angeles joined the Mayor of Oklahoma City, David Holt and founding director of the Duke-Margolis Center for Health Policy, Mark McClellan to outline a “brand new infrastructure.” The CARES Corps is an alliance of the national government, local public officials, and healthcare professionals that are under federal leadership and funding. Within the CARES Corps there are three core factors that it will focus on healthcare, economy, and the unity of Government Officials.
