L.A. COUNTY RECOGNIZES NATIONAL CENSUS DAY

The U.S. Constitution mandates a census of the nation’s population every 10 years. Census statistics are used to determine the number of seats each state holds in Congress and how much in federal funding is allocated to state and local communities for the next 10 years. Local government officials use the census to ensure public safety and plan new schools and hospitals. Businesses use census data to decide where to build factories, offices and stores, which creates jobs. Real estate developers and city planners use the census to plan new homes and improve neighborhoods. Residents use the census to support community initiatives involving legislation, quality-of-life and consumer advocacy.

Los Angeles County to Expand Opioid Use Prevention and Treatment Efforts

Prescription opioid overdose hospitalizations increased from 601 in 2006 to 765 in 2016. In 2017, 488 individuals in Los Angeles County died from an opioid overdose. In response to this growing epidemic, today the Board of Supervisors approved a motion authored by Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis, and co-authored by Supervisor Janice Hahn, that will streamline prevention efforts and expand Medication for Addiction Treatment (MAT) for opioid users throughout the County.

Missing L.A. County Voter Names Blamed on Software Bug

The Los Angeles Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk said roster problem ultimately affected approximately 12,000 voters who went to the polls and had to cast provisional ballots, which were processed and counted as part of the official election results. No voters were removed from voting rolls because of the roster error, and the right to vote was never at issue, the clerk’s office said.
