Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove visited local Black-owned businesses around the historic Leimert Park on Feb. 22, in honor of Black History Month.
On Monday, December 27, the Leimert Park community surprised longtime business owner and community activist and cornerstone, Sika Dwimfo, for his 81st birthday. As Sika’s birthday approached, Albert Lord, Community Build vice president of Gov. Relations and Arts Programs, wanted to do more. “When I learned about Sika’s 81st birthday, I thought it would a nice idea to give him his flowers now, vs. later. Sika has always been a gentle and kind friend. For me to do this for him was the least I could do,” said Lord. Close to 30 people, including representatives from various organizations to merchants
The festival is the realization of a vision from Founder Sika Dwimfo to create an annual event that celebrates unity, family, diversity and the legacy of positive contributions that Leimert Park has made to the city of Los Angeles. Sponsored by International Eye, Los Angeles, the 2019 festival celebrates the vibrant international cultures that have created the dynamic community acknowledged as the cultural epi-center for Black arts and culture.
