Nominations were unveiled today for the 28th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, with the casts of “Belfast,” “CODA,” “Don’t Look Up,” “House of Gucci” and “King Richard” named as contenders in the best motion picture category days after a lackluster Golden Globe Awards ceremony that garnered little attention.
Davis garnered Critics Choice, Golden Globe, SAG, BAFTA, and an Academy Award in the category of Best Supporting Actress for her role in “Fences” for Paramount Pictures. She also starred with Denzel Washington in the 2010 revival of the play on Broadway. Her performance earned her a Tony Award, as well as the Drama Critics’ Circle Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, and Drama Desk Award.

“Black Panther” snagged the most prestigious award at the 25th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Motion Picture, on Sunday night inside the Shrine Auditorium. Chadwick Boseman, who played the film’s leading man T’Challa, used Nina Simone’s song “To be Young, Gifted and Black” as a way to describe the groundbreaking win in his acceptance speech.
Amazon Studios won a bidding war for the rights to produce the Shirley Chisholm film. The project is the first Amazon Studios production deal emerging from the partnership between Viola Davis and Julius Tennon’s JuVee Productions and Amazon.

Executive Producer of the SAG Awards, Kathy Connell, says this year’s ceremony will feature all female presenters, an idea she conceptualized after her experience at the national Women’s March in Washington, D.C. earlier this year.

The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards showed the governors of the Academy Awards how nominations and wins are really suppose to go—with diversity. The wins of Queen Latifah, Viola Davis, Uzo Aduba and the entire cast of “Orange Is the New Black”, plus a two time win for Idris Elba showed that the SAG—union for actors—celebrated the diversity in last year’s entertainment.
