Carl Matthews’ Civil Rights Legacy Set

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Carl Wesley Matthews, the leader of the local lunch counter protest in 1960 that became the state’s first victory for the sit-in movement, passed away on Friday, Feb. 26.

A service for Matthews was held Thursday, March 3 at noon at Russell Funeral Home, 822 Carl Russell Ave.

Four white police officers are on administrative duty after a black man who was subdued with pepper spray died in custody, authorities said. Winston-Salem authorities said in a written statement that 31-year-old Travis Nevelle Page became unresponsive after he was taken into custody on December 9 following a brief struggle with officers. A former Transportation Security Administration officer faces trial in January for allegedly accepting bribes to allow checked bags filled with marijuana to be cleared through screening checkpoints at Los Angeles International Airport. Deondre Smith, 33, of South Los Angeles, pleaded not guilty on November 19 to charges contained in a two-count indictment alleging conspiracy to distribute marijuana and bribery of a public official, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. U.S. Magistrate Judge Alka Sagar granted Smith’s release on $50,000 bail.
