People of color have been mistreated by those in positions of power in the music industry, especially Black women. They have been oversexualized and disrespected in various aspects of the entertainment realm.

The U.S. Center for SafeSport is fielding 55% more reports of sex abuse and other misconduct in 2019 than it did last year, leading to an increasingly urgent debate over who should provide the lion’s share of money to an organization struggling to manage its caseload. This week, the 2½-year-old center tasked with investigating sex-abuse claims in Olympic sports received a $1.3 million infusion from the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, bringing the USOPC’s overall contribution to $7.4 million in 2019. The country’s national governing bodies, which oversee the individual Olympic sports, have contributed $2.05 million for this year, and

I attempted to become a Republican several times, but the Board of Election kept keeping me as a Democrat. I finally became a Republican in 2019,” said Shekinah Monee of Perfect Vision PR Company.
Madeleine Albright said, “There is plenty of room in the world for mediocre men, but there is no room for mediocre women.” History will show 2018 as the year of the woman. Whether we look at what came from the #MeToo Movement or the results from the midterm elections where a record number of women around the country were voted to various positions. People have fallen in love with Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and when she fell and broke several ribs, we were even willing to give up our own to help her heal. We have examples all around us every day of women who are anything but mediocre. Even when we fall, we get right back up.
This past week we observed daylight savings time by turning our clocks back an hour with the hope to make better use of daylight. In other words, having an extra hour of daylight should help us be more productive with our days. The real question is what are we doing with the time we are given no matter what? Twenty-four hours is the same whether there is light or darkness.
Neil Portnow is mistaken. His statements are a mess, but I get why he can’t empathize with women and women of color. HE is saying, the more women there are, the more chances women have to WIN. BUT. WE NEED MORE WOMEN, more WOMEN OF COLOR AND MORE INCLUSIVE MINDED PEOPLE in positions of power, in the rooms where decisions are made. When this happens, doors will open for women to be represented in more DIVERSE WAYS. The music industry is dominated by white men and the Grammys and NARAS are run and produced by ONLY white men. The fact that Portnow says we’d “be welcomed” indicates that he doesn’t think we’re part of the household to begin with.
I’m not ever, ever, ever going to excuse sexual perfidy (and more) in the workplace, but I do wonder why we can wink, nod, and grin about racial workplace misbehavior while we stand our ground about gender.
