Over the past month, racial equity has been a key part of our national dialogue as we observed the one-year anniversary of George Floyd’s death, the 100-year anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre and Juneteenth, the oldest nationally recognized commemoration marking the end of slavery in the United States.
One of our own was thrown in the deep end a few years ago but he refused to drown, and like a phoenix he is rising. His name is Tavis Smiley. Tavis was born in Mississippi, raised in Indiana, but calls Los Angeles his home.

June 20th is Father’s Day, the day we celebrate the 70 million fathers in the United States. The reason this day plays a pivotal role in my life is because of the tumultuous relationship I had with my father had a chance to be restored before his death. Without going into detail my father was not always there for me when I needed him most and his lifestyle in my formative years was quite questionable.
Black communities in greater Los Angeles and throughout the United States will observe Juneteenth with solemn memorials, spirited programs, singing and dancing, and a sense of jubilee.
The celebration of Juneteenth nationally took a new turn in its bid to become a nationally recognized Black holiday last year in the context of the intensified struggle against police violence and systemic racism.

In an attempt to win Black voters that have been elusive for the Republican Party for many cycles, President Donald Trump announced a “Platinum Plan,” of Black Economic Empowerment.
Trump unveiled the plan during an Atlanta rally with less than six weeks left until Election Day on November 3rd. Currently, President Barack Obama’s former Vice President Joe Biden in leading in the polls in many key states in the presidential contest.
Juneteenth is not recognized as an official federal holiday, although on June 19 of this year the U.S. Senate passed a resolution seeking to make it a federal holiday.
