As our fellow Californians and Americans protest across our country, we must not lose sight of why they are protesting. It’s because of a deep pain that we recognize all too well. The pain of not confronting a dark history that has spanned the life of our country. The pain of recognizing our fathers, uncles, brothers, mothers, sisters, and aunts in the faces of so many Black men and women who were taken from us because of racism and violence.

Jordan Davis’ Mom Lucy McBath Wins Close Congressional Race

Underdog gun control advocate Lucy McBath won a Georgia House Seat against GOP incumbent Karen Handel. Handel beat Democrat Jon Ossoff in last year’s special election. On Wednesday, November 8 midday, McBath declared victory in the very tight race. Handel did not concede until Thursday morning.

  Lucia “Lucy” McBath mother of slain teen Jordan Davis has won the Democratic nomination in Georgia’s 6th Congressional District after winning a runoff election on Tuesday. She joins the list of a growing number of black women who want to shake up Washington. McBath stepped onto the national stage at the 2016 Democratic National Convention, joining eight other mothers whose Black children were killed by cops or gun violence. It was a death that dominated the headlines. Jordan Davis, an African-American teenager, and a group of friends were sitting in their parked car in Jacksonville, Fla., playing rap music and, otherwise, just minding their own business. But Michael David Dunn, a 45-year-old White man and software developer, didn’t appreciate the music and, after a brief argument, returned to his own car where he grabbed a loaded handgun and fired 10 rounds into the car occupied by Davis and three others.
