When it comes to marching bands, there’s just something about the big bands at HBCUs that sets them apart from your average ensemble of snares, woodwinds and brass. For bands like the Southern University Marching Band, also known as the “Human Jukebox,” it’s all about soul – and of course it’s all about the big sound- but most of all, it’s about putting on an epic performance. Now, fans of the famous Human Jukebox marching band can see them represent Louisiana in the 131stRose Parade 2020.

Last week marked the culmination of the 2019 HBCU in LA program, an 8- to 10-week summer experience during which HBCU students from across the country gain access to coveted opportunities in the entertainment industry through training and internships. As they pursue paid internship positions, they are housed in Los Angeles free of charge, ensuring that they are not barred from participating due to low-income status. HBCU in LA is the signature program of the Entertainment Industry College Outreach Program (EICOP), a recruitment and diversity program that seeks to give students of all backgrounds the tools needed to succeed in the entertainment industry.

UNCF Celebrates 75 Years of Investing in Better Futures at National DC Gala

During an historic night—in more ways than one—UNCF (United Negro College Fund) celebrated its 75th anniversary at its national UNCF “A Mind is…” Gala in Washington, DC, March 7. The event helped the storied organization reach new fundraising heights, raising more than it ever has during a single event—$3.4 million—for UNCF’s historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). The event, whose title echoes the group’s iconic motto, “A mind is a terrible thing to waste,”® celebrated the founding of the organization by Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) president Dr. Frederick Douglass Patterson with backing from corporate leaders led by John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and Coca Cola President Robert W. Woodruff.

Laz Alonso joined The Home Depot Retool Your School Grant Improvement Program during CIAA to encourage guests to start voting for their favorite HBCU. Since its launch 10 years ago, the Home Depot has donated more than $2.1 million dollars in campus improvement grants that allow HBCUs to make sustainable improvements to their campuses. Past projects have included eco-friendly classrooms, refurbished basketball courts, modernized health clinics, and communal student space upgrades. To celebrate the 10th year anniversary, The Home Depot has increased its support towards the program and HBCUs by offering ten $50,000 campus improvement grants, creating a new grant, “Campaign of the Year,” which will be awarded to the school whose campaign proves to be most original, innovative and particularly effective.

Congressman Bishop Participates in the Second Annual HBCU Steam Day of Action on Capitol Hill

Washington, D.C. –  Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) and the Bipartisan Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Caucus and the Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) Caucus recently hosted the second annual HBCU STEAM Day of Action on Capitol Hill. This annual event brings together education and industry leaders and Members of Congress for a collective day of advocacy for our nation’s 102 HBCUs and their 300,000 students.
