The late Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant posthumously received the 72nd Los Angeles Area Emmys Governors Award for his legacy of philanthropy, community building and inspiration that extended beyond the basketball court.
A crowd of 20,000 people rose to their feet and cheered as Vanessa Bryant and the Bryant family emerged out of the Staples Center tunnel towards the rose-adorned stage positioned near center court for Kobe and Gianna Bryant’s public memorial service on Monday morning.
Kobe Bryant sounded just as passionate about coaching his daughter’s middle-school basketball team as he was about playing for the Los Angeles Lakers under Phil Jackson as he held court about his coaching philosophies and the state of youth sports on Tuesday.
The former Los Angeles Lakers star won an Oscar in the animated short category for “Dear Basketball,” a poem he wrote after ending his 20-year career on the court in 2016.
