Robert Rubin – An Unsung Hero in L.A.’s Faith Community

Robert Rubin, the executive director of the Vermont Village Community Development Corporation, has committed his life to social justice and community development for people living in South Los Angeles. South Los Angeles has experienced poverty, crime, drug addiction, gang violence, homelessness, civil unrest, and political upheaval. But there is one unsung hero consistently changing a negative narrative in a God inspired message of hope. Robert Rubin is that unsung hero for social justice and community development.

FFFN’s “Food, Facts and Film” Highlight Foster Care System

Faith Foster Families Network will host “Food, Facts and Film” on Oct. 5, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Holman United Methodist Church, 3320 W. Adams Blvd., in Los Angeles. According to Nancy Harris, FFFN executive director, the free event will focus on enlightening the community about foster care and the child welfare system. In addition to food stations and information, the program will feature a screening of the HBO documentary, “Foster.”  Following the screening, a panel discussion will take place that includes two of the main individuals in the film. The producer is scheduled to participate as well.

South L.A. Churches Unite to Aid Foster Families and Youth

Town hall set for Oct. 16 at Center of Hope Church in Inglewood  Six churches in the greater South Los Angeles area recently partnered to create the Faith Foster Families Network to offer another level of support to parents and youth involved in the foster care system. Holman CDC of Holman United Methodist Church, the Biddy Mason Charitable Foundation of First AME Church, the West Angeles CDC of West Angeles Church of God in Christ all in Los Angeles, along with the Center of Hope in Inglewood, the City of Refuge in Gardena and Crossroads United Methodist Church in Compton

City of Refuge, Chef Loretta Jones Host Thanksgiving Feast

 Bishop Noel Jones and Chef Loretta Jones hosted the 13th annual community-wide free Thanksgiving Feast on Nov. 21, at City of Refuge Church, 14527 S. San Pedro Street in Gardena. An overflowing crowd attended the event and enjoyed a hot meal, friendship and fellowship. Congresswoman Maxine Waters and NBA player Matt Barnes were on hand as well for the ceremonial turkey carving. City of Refuge volunteers also distributed free groceries, clothes, shoes and personal hygiene kits.
