Superintendent Tony Thurmond Announces $420,000 in Grants to the Bridging the Digital Divide Fund to Benefit Students in Southern California

State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tony Thurmond announced that Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) and San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E), in partnership with The San Diego Foundation, have donated a total of $420,000 to the Bridging the Digital Divide Fund. SDG&E and The San Diego Foundation’s grant of $100,000 to the Classroom of the Future Foundation will address digital divide among tribal K-12 youth in San Diego County. SoCalGas’ portion of $320,000 will be split into five grants to separate organizations in Southern California for specific work to close the digital divide. SoCalGas and SDG&E are part of the Sempra Energy family of companies.

Black Employees File Formal Complaint Against California Department of Education

Dr. Shirley Thornton, a retired educator and colonel in the United States Army Reserves, remembers reaching a “glass ceiling” when she tried to advance to a senior level position at the California Department of Education (CDE). “The problems I faced were centered around my being in charge and people accepting that,” said Thornton who lives in the Los Angeles area. She says when the position for Deputy Superintendent, Specialized Programs came open, officials at the CDE told her she would have to apply for it. At the same time, a white colleague, also a woman, was appointed to an equivalent
