‘Jewel’s Catch One’: A Lesbian Stands Up Against the Man for 40 Years and Wins

Jewel Thais-Williams is an African-American, lesbian whose very presence, in Los Angeles, in 1973 was the picture of disruption. She bought a building on Pico and Crenshaw, in a predominantly Black neighborhood, and then she created a nightclub—Catch One— that catered to an underserved clientele.
