Asm. Shirley Weber’s Daughter Is Running for her Mom’s San Diego District Seat

Dr. Akilah Weber, the daughter of Dr. Shirley Weber (D-San Diego), has announced that she is running for the 79th Assembly District seat that her mom will soon vacate. If she wins, the younger Dr. Weber would have the opportunity to carry on a family legacy in California politics known for strategic consensus building at the state level that’s rooted in – and deeply connected to — local grassroots organizing at home.

AB 2500 Denies Californians Access to Responsible, Regulated Credit Options

Blocking families from accessing certain types of loans would be particularly damaging for African American families. According to a study by the Center for the New Middle Class, even when African Americans have credit scores of 700 or above – generally considered to be a “good” score on a scale of 300 to 850 – their financial wellness resembles those with much lower credit scores. In fact, 80 percent of these families were likely to say that they live paycheck-to-paycheck, they were two and a half times more likely to overdraft on a bank account and they 28 percent less likely to have $1,200 set aside for a financial emergency.

California State Legislature Passes Major Health Care Reform Bills

The California State Legislature passed a package of major health care reform bills recently, including SBX2-2, a Managed Care Organization (MCO) Tax, that will secure federal funding for Medi-Cal, and ABX2-1 that will increase funding for developmental disability services by $306.5 million.
