Words of the Week – Open Your Mind

Scripture: Luke 24:45, NIV People have varying opinions about what is happening in our society. A lot is happening: The perpetuation of “The Big Lie.” Protests. Press Conferences. Gun violence: police shoot unarmed Black men and boys; public attacks and shootings of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI); a man had a bad day, so he went to a grocery store and shot and killed innocent people; and disgruntled employees shot and killed their managers and co-workers and themselves. As I read Facebook, Twitter, newspapers, and emails, as I listened to news reports on the television, radio and social media,

Words of the Week – The Foolishness of God

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:18-25, NIV Our country is in crisis. American citizens are dealing with a highly contagious deadly disease, COVID-19. Unemployment is at an all-time high. People are experiencing food insecurities and homelessness. Our children can’t return to school. They are suffering from the effects of isolation and the lack of socialization with their peers. Many American citizens are on the verge of a mental health breakdown. People mistrust the government, so they attempt to overthrow it. Yet, many of the persons elected to Congress to represent the people have opted to display tomfoolery as oppose to seeing the

Words of the Week – One Nation Under God

Scripture: Deuteronomy 17:14-20 America has a great deal of work to do to bring these words from our Pledge of Allegiance to fruition: “…one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” Today’s scripture text comes from the book of Deuteronomy. In Hebrew, Deuteronomy means “words.” The book of Deuteronomy is a “repetition of the law.” Moses is the author of Deuteronomy. Therefore, it’s known as the Book of the Law of Moses. Jesus attributed the book of Deuteronomy to Moses (Matthew 19:8). The apostle Peter, in Acts 3:22-23, credited Deuteronomy 18:15, 18 and 19 to Moses. The

Words of the Week – Shelter in Place

Scripture: John 20:1; 11-18, NIV The U.S. government said that the week of April 5 would be the toughest week of the coronavirus pandemic! That week was Holy Week. It commemorated Jesus’ toughest week! On Sunday, Palm Sunday, Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a colt. The crowd shouted, “Hosanna!” and waved palm branches. By Thursday, Jesus had the Last Supper with his disciples. He was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane and dragged from one kangaroo court to another. The same crowd that shouted “Hosanna” on Sunday cried “Crucify Him!” on Thursday.  On Friday, following betrayal, arrest, desertion, false trials,

God’s Guidance Inspires Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program’s Response to COVID-19

As the coronavirus rapidly enveloped the country, Dr. Bill Releford prayed for God’s direction to help the African American community in the greater South L.A. area. Releford, who founded the Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program, requested God’s guidance in using his skills and talents to reduce the occurrence of COVID-19, the disease caused by coronavirus, in Black people. In response to Releford’s request, God gave him a tangible solution – distribute free sanitizers and face masks to the community, which is what Releford did on March 27. Joined by members of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, he and the men
