Rev. Dr. Frederick Murph Passes, Homegoing Service Set

The Los Angeles faith community bid farewell to the Rev. Dr. Frederick Ormonde Murph on June 2. A dedicated minister who served in California for decades, he was well known in the Los Angeles-area as the pastor of Brookins Community AME Church from 1996 to 2008. Dr. Murph passed from a non-COVID related illness at the age of 67. A celebration of his life is scheduled for Thursday, June 18, at Greater Bethel Cathedral, 4831 S. Gramercy Place in Los Angeles. A viewing will take place from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and the service will start at 11 a.m.

Kirkland Keeping Busy Since Retiring as Bishop

It’s been nearly three years since the Right Rev. T. Larry Kirkland, Sr. retired as an AME bishop after 55 years of ministry, but his schedule remains as busy as ever. A powerful preacher and insightful teacher, Kirkland is frequently invited to deliver sermons at churches throughout Southern California as well as in other parts of the country. His next local engagement takes place at Agape Church of Los Angeles. The ministry, led by Bishop Craig A. Worsham, will welcome Kirkland to deliver the sermon on Resurrection Day, April 21, at the 8 a.m. service in the worship center

Celebration of Life Set for Willie Mae Townsend-Waddell

A love of God, family, church and community reflects the lifelong passion of Willie Mae Scoby Townsend-Waddell, who passed away Sept. 7 following a brief illness. As a faithful Christian, mother, grandmother and educator, Willie dedicated her adult years to serving the Lord and making a positive difference in the lives of others. Her viewing will be held Thursday, Sept. 14, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., at McKay’s Mortuary, 3918 Marine Ave., in Lawndale. Bennett Joins UL Quarter Century Club

Joan Bennett, a member of Brookins Community AME Church, was recently inducted into the National Urban League (UL) Quarter Century Club during the UL’s national conference held in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
