We Can’t Breathe: Don’t Bow Down to Fossil Fuels 

As the lead pastor of McCarty Memorial Church in Los Angeles and Black civil rights leader, I am calling on the California Air Resources Board to approve the Advanced Clean Fleet rule at their meeting this week. The burden of air pollution in our city falls disproportionately on communities of color, and we cannot afford to wait any longer for action.

“We know that gasoline-powered vehicles are unequivocally worsening the climate crisis. In L.A., a city that is notorious for its reliance on cars, it’s imperative that we take immediate action to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and really model leadership in boldly pursuing a sustainable, green economy,” said Councilwoman Nithya Raman, who introduced the resolution.

Making Clean Air a Reality

The first few meetings I attended during my internship at SCAQMD truly opened my eyes to the hardships that families face because of poor air quality, especially those living in environmental justice communities. I had no personal experiences with asthma or other air pollution-related illnesses, but I heard continuously about babies who had to wear masks to breathe, about children who had to sit on the sidelines and watch while others played games and about people who were suffering.
