Q:I’m going on vacation with my girls and want fabulous make-up day and night, have any tips?

A: You know I do. Here with some great summer beauty advice, is Erika Guinn, top make-up artist and beauty expert with one of the industry’s leading cosmetic companies. “The whole idea of summer make-up,” says Erika, “is to wear less but look your best.” As regional trainer and educational specialist for 12 years, Erika does core training for about 450 make-up artists, plus leads artists on several big events including, BET Awards, The Grammys, New York Fashion Week and was even a part of the make-up team which did body painting on Beyonce’.  Today, Erika offers some GREAT advice on summer make-up trends including – bronzers, gorgeous lip colors, and a sexy shimmer on the eyes and cheeks.

“A must for summer make up is to find a great lightweight tinted moisturizer as foundation, one that contains sun block with UVB protection. During summer we get darker simply from sun exposure. A bronzer helps to bridge that gap between your regular foundation color and your new summer look. Wear your normal foundation color but for the summer months bump up your foundation with a nice warm toned bronzer.”

Erika adds, “A taboo of African American women in the past has been, I can’t wear a bright lipstick against my skin tone. Celebrities like Nicki Minaj and Jennifer Hudson broke that mold. Now young African American girls, reminiscent of the 80’s, are wearing bright, bold lip colors. Bright lips are IN! Pick a beautiful coral, a beautiful pink, those are going to be your tickets.”

“Summer make up is not complete without adding a little color on the cheeks”, she continues. “I believe a woman should have 3 different blush categories – a brown, a pink and a peachy based blush. Those 3 colors read beautifully on our skin. Another great tip is to add a bit of gold or shimmer. A beautiful gold-toned eye shadow with a shimmer, allows it to be very light reflective while providing a highlight. Also, placing that gold highlight above the check bone allows you to have an eye-catching shimmer as you turn your head side-to-side.”
