There are certain words in the English language that generate a warm thought or feeling, words like home, happy, mother, and family. Another one of those magical words is the word spring. When I think of that word I get all kind of special feelings. It has special meanings to different members of my family as well.
My husband thinks of “spring training” when baseball teams go to Arizona and Florida to get ready for a new season. My children back in the day and my grandchildren today think of “spring break” as a time when they are out of school for a week and get a chance to go to a fun place for rest and recreation.
My grandmother taught me to think of “spring cleaning” a time to shake off the effects of winter and a time to think of opportunity and transformation. My grandmother shared with me that spring cleaning was an age-old tradition that dated back to the days when homes were heated by wood and lit by lanterns that left layers of soot on every surface.
When spring arrived, it was time to open up the windows and doors, pull out the rugs and bedding to beat away the dust, and scrub the floors and windows until they shined. Spring cleaning gives us a chance to transform our living spaces but it also gives us an opportunity to transform our mind spaces.
Sometimes we have an idea of what we want in life, but we feel stuck and not sure where or how to get the ball rolling. It is always good to start with a good old fashion cleaning. As we sort through the thoughts in our mind, the stuff in our homes, and the clutter in our offices, things can begin to become clearer and cleaner.
Many of us have heard the saying that it is difficult to see the forest for the trees. This can be true in our day-to-day lives as well. For me, when I stop and think about what I need and what is necessary for me to do to go to the next level or season, I often realize that it becomes necessary for me to let go of what once was, to take hold and appreciate what is to become. We can change our life by changing how we think.
If you spring into action and begin to change the way you are living or change the way you are thinking, you can begin to focus on the specific tasks you want for your home or for your life. Whether cleaning your home or your thoughts, it reduces stress and clutter in your life and puts you in a better mindset and mood.
Clutter in your house has a way of creating mental images that are not always healthy. Physical cleaning can remove allergens such as dust, pollen, and mildew, it can also rid your home of pollutants, too, which can impact your immune health. Mental cleaning can remove anxiety, doubt, despair, discomfort, and uncertainty.
Once you have done a little cleaning, you should be able to think a little clearer on what you need to do. Do you have anyone holding you accountable or helping you reach your goals? If you need assistance do not be afraid to seek the necessary and right kind of assistance you need to reach your goals.
Spring is all about new beginnings. Take it upon yourself to use the changing of seasons to create change in yourself. You will feel a weight lifted.
Healing Without Hate: It’s a choice. It’s a lifestyle. Pass it on.
